D. McGuinty Student Awards Programs

The David McGuinty Award for Citizenship
Grade 8 Graduates

In each school in Ottawa South, the David McGuinty Award for Citizenship recognizes an eighth grade student selected by teachers for his or her civic participation in school and the community, and for scholastic achievement. The award honors the student who has shown by their words and actions that they possess the qualities and characteristics we hope to instill in all students and in our community.

Civic participation is a critical element in the vibrancy and health of our democracy, and students who devote time and energy to these pursuits are worthy of recognition for their efforts. Citizenship awards provide encouragement for students to continue such endeavors throughout their school years and beyond.

The award is made using the following specific criteria:

  1. volunteer service in the community;
  2. involvement in citizenship or character-building organizations;
  3. a good scholastic record;
  4. participation in student government programs or activities;
  5. faithful school attendance;
  6. character and the courage act rightly; and,
  7. leadership skills and motivation of peers to benefit the community.

The winner receives a personalized certificate and congratulatory letter from Mr. McGuinty, and an Oxford Atlas valued at $140.
